This is a question I hear quite often from voters.

Because voters of District 2 are in the city, they receive their police and fire protection, and public works services (like snow plowing) from the City of Galesburg. So, what does the County Board do for the city residents?

Most county services seem to "fly under the radar" for city residents. However, these services are vitally important. They are:

  • County Jail: Houses criminal offenders.

  • Mary Davis Home (juvenile detention): Houses and attempts to rehabilitate youthful offenders.

  • Knox County Nursing Home: Provides vital nursing services for our elderly residents.

  • Knox County Sheriff's Department: Provides law enforcement for the entire county, serves legal papers, and guards our courthouse.

  • County Clerk's Office: Administers elections, calculates tax rates, collects delinquent taxes, maintains vital records, and issues marriage licenses.

  • Highway Department: Constructs, maintains, and repairs roads and bridges, plows snow, patches potholes, erects and maintains road signs.

  • Landfill Department: Operates the only landfill in Knox County.

    AND MANY MORE SERVICES!

Often, the only contact many city residents have with county services is when they pay property taxes, pay a traffic ticket, or are called for jury duty. As you can see, the county does many things for our city residents that are important to our daily lives.
